Dog and Cat Sterilisation Subsidy

Subsidies are available to assist in the sterilisation of your dog or cat. Conditions apply.

Dog Attack/Dangerous Dogs

A dog attack is a serious offence and carries a maximum penalty of $10,000 (Dangerous dogs $20,000). If a dog attacks a person, animal or vehicle it can be declared a ‘Dangerous Dog’. If declared dangerous, a dog must wear a muzzle, an identifying collar and be on a leash at all times when in public, including the beach, in addition to other onerous kennelling/ fencing and registration requirements. An attack does not necessarily mean a bite from a dog. If a dog rushes at or attempts to rush at a person or animal, it is considered an attack.

Dog Exercise Areas

All dogs must be held on a leash at all times unless they are in a designated dog exercise area. These areas are clearly signposted. The dog must be kept under effective control at all times in these areas. An on-the-spot fine of $100 applies to the owner of any dog which is in breach of these conditions.

The dog exercise area is located on Cable Beach south of the Surf Club. Shire ovals and recreation grounds are not dog exercise areas and dogs in these areas must be held on a leash by a person capable of controlling the dog.

Dogs are prohibited on Cable Beach in the swimming area and on the first 1km of the beach north of the rocks from Cable Beach Reserve, on Cable Beach Reserve and Town Beach.

A seasonal restriction occurs at Gantheaume Point to coincide with the horse racing season. Dogs when exercised within the beach foreshore area at Gantheaume Point to a point 1.5km north of the “vehicle prohibited” sign are required to be leashed during the period from 1 May to 31 August every year from 5:30am to 10am, Monday to Friday inclusive.

Dog Pound

The pound is situated at the veterinarian’s premises on the corner of Cable Beach Road and Port Drive. Fees are imposed on all impounded animals and are payable to the Shire before the release of your animal. Any animal impounded for more than 72 hours may be euthanased.

To view animals in the pound please make an appointment with Rangers by calling 0407 382 079.
